If you've never designed a piece of custom jewelry before, you're probably wondering, "Where do I even start?" You're not alone. Almost every client who walks through our doors tells us the same thing. They've spent hours on Pinterest, Instagram, TikTok, and Google looking at inspiration photos, but instead of feeling more confident, they usually feel overwhelmed.
At Diamond Daughters, we're a women-owned and family-owned fine jewelry store in San Diego, run by two sisters and our mom. While we're best known for our custom engagement rings and wedding bands for both men and women, we also create custom fine jewelry for every occasion. One of our favorite parts of our job is taking what feels confusing and making it simple, exciting, and enjoyable.
Today we'd like to take you behind the scenes and show you exactly what happens during a private consultation with us.
The First Thing We Ask
Most people think the first question we'll ask is what ring style they like. It isn't. The first thing we ask is your budget. We don't ask because we're trying to sell you the most expensive ring. We ask because your budget helps us recommend the right center stone type and center stone size that comfortably fit your budget. It also helps us narrow down the design options that make the most sense for you. Our goal is to help you create a custom piece you'll love while staying within a budget you're comfortable with.
Next, We Choose Your Center Stone
Now that we know your budget, we can recommend the center stone options that fit your priorities. Some clients have always wanted a natural diamond. Others choose lab grown diamonds because they can often purchase a larger center stone within the same budget. Others are curious about moissanite. Every option has advantages, and we'll explain the differences honestly so you can make the decision that's right for you.
Now Comes the Fun Part
Once we've narrowed down your center stone, we ask to see your inspiration photos. One thing we hear all the time is, "They're all different." Perfect! Maybe you love the band from one ring, the hidden halo from another, and the side profile from a third. That's the beauty of custom jewelry. We combine the details you love into one design that's uniquely yours.
We Build Your Ring Together
An engagement ring is made up of many design elements working together. During your consultation we'll help you choose your engagement ring style, ring setting, band width, prong style, metal, and details like a hidden halo, pavé band, bezel setting, or tulip gallery. We'll explain how each choice changes the appearance, comfort, and durability of your ring so you can make an informed decision.
Choosing the Right Metal
The metal we recommend most often is 14K gold. Some people like platinum because they think it's a better choice, but keep in mind it is more expensive and has some flaws. Both are beautiful and durable, but they wear differently over time. Platinum naturally develops a softer matte gray patina with everyday wear. Some people love that look, while others prefer the brighter shine that 14K gold maintains. There isn't a right or wrong answer. Our job is simply to explain the differences so you know exactly what to expect before making your decision.
Our Recommendations...But the Final Decision Is Always Yours
If there's a design detail that we believe may bend, break, loosen stones, snag, or require more maintenance over time, we'll always tell you. We'll explain the risks and offer suggestions that may improve the durability of your jewelry while keeping the look you love.
At the end of the day, it's your jewelry, we'll make the piece you want. We simply believe you deserve to understand the long-term maintenance that may come with certain design choices. Once we've explained those risks and you've decided to move forward, the ongoing care of that design becomes your responsibility.
Caring for Your Jewelry
Every piece purchased from Diamond Daughters includes complimentary lifetime cleanings and inspections. We recommend bringing your jewelry in every six months so we can professionally clean it, inspect it, and make sure everything is secure. If you're local to San Diego, simply book a repairs appointment so we can take care of it. If you don't live nearby, we also offer insured round-trip shipping for cleanings and inspections for an additional fee. Contact us for current shipping rates and details.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why do you ask about my budget first?
Your budget helps us recommend the right center stone type, center stone size, and design options for your goals.
Can I combine ideas from different rings?
Absolutely. That's one of the biggest benefits of custom jewelry. We can combine details from multiple inspiration photos into one unique design.
Should I choose lab grown diamonds, a natural diamond, or moissanite?
Each option has its own advantages. During your consultation we'll explain the differences and help you choose what best fits your priorities and budget.

Both are excellent choices. We personally love 14k gold, but the best option depends on your lifestyle and maintenance preferences. We'll explain the pros and cons of each.
Do you only make engagement rings?
No. While we're best known for custom engagement rings and wedding bands for men and women, we also create anniversary bands, earrings, necklaces, bracelets, pendants, heirloom redesigns, and other custom fine jewelry.
How often should I have my jewelry cleaned and inspected?
Every six months. Lifetime cleanings and inspections are included with your purchase. If you're outside San Diego, we also offer insured round-trip shipping for an additional fee.
